Autumn Term
This term our main theme is The Romans. We will be looking at who they were, where they came from and how they influenced both Welsh and British History. We will be visiting the Roman Heritage Site in Caerleon.
The children will have an opportunity to develop lifelong learning skills in all areas of the New Skills Curriculum for 2008.
In maths the children will study addition and subtraction up to 100 and 1000; the relationship between multiplication and division; how to count and subtract money and using and applying; fractions-halves, quarters, tenths, thirds and fifths and grid referencing. The children will also learn the 2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables.
Maths homework will be given out every week and is due in on a Monday. Try to encourage your child to be more independent when completing their homework. Every Monday your child will be given a list of words to learn for a spelling test on the following week. Children need to bring their spelling book to school every Monday for a new list of words to learn. Homework will also be given in Literacy once a week. I have enclosed a copy of the letter formation the children will be using in their handwriting. If the children do have an opportunity to practise their handwriting at home this would help their progress in school.
The children will have an opportunity to bring in something important to them and speak about it in front of their classmates. This will give the children an opportunity to improve their speech and language, and it would benefit the children if they could practise what they intend to say at home first.
When listening to your child read please try to ask lots of questions about what they are reading, as well as discussing pictures to improve their comprehension skills and vocabulary. They will be asked to recall the story, which helps develop memory skills and prepares the child for story writing skills. Please return your child’s reading record book with their reading book everyday. It would be appreciated if you could write a short comment in the book when you hear your child read. Please remember our school and class libraries are available to all children and reading a variety of text will help to improve your child’s reading, writing and comprehension skills. Good reading skills will assist your child in every aspect of life.
P.E. lessons are on a Wednesday afternoon and games outdoors are on a Thursday afternoon. The children are expected to wear appropriate clothing for these sessions: shorts and tee shirt for indoor and shorts or tracksuit bottom with trainers for outdoor sessions.
Can all parents ensure that their child does not wear jewellery to school, particularly on P.E. days due to health and safety issues?
Thank you for your support
